Failed Your New Year Resolutions Already? 3 Reasons Why

Ellie Savoy

Did you set out at the start of the new year all excited about how your life would be different this year?

If so, you are not alone. The most common items on the list that we set out to change include:

  • Lose weight
  • Eat healthy
  • Quit smoking
  • Save money

How is it going for you? Are you already feeling deflated because you haven’t been able to stay the course? If it’s not going as well as you had hoped, you can still reach for your goals and dreams by thinking a little differently.

1. Any day of the year is a good day to make a change.

Choosing a time in the future often sets us up for failure. If you are still struggling to get the breakthroughs you are looking for, let go of starting tomorrow or next Monday, start today. In this very moment, while reading this blog decide what you are going to do differently and why you want to make the change. The why is often more important than the how. Also, take a look at your goals and ask yourself if they are realistic. If you are trying to change more than two habits at once, take an honest look at your level of motivation. Are you truly motivated or are you making excuses?

2. How do you handle a setback?

Lifestyle changes are challenging for many and require practice and consistency in order to create a new habit. When you feel derailed or want to give up, remind yourself of why you are creating the change in your life. Hopefully your name will be on the list! We often forget that we are a priority in our own life. But, perhaps it’s because you want to lose weight so playing with your children or grandchildren is easier and more fun, or you are saving for the vacation you have always dreamed of. Keeping the reason in mind will help you stay the course and navigate your way through the challenges.

3. There are many approaches to achieving your goal.

When are motivation is high we feel ready to take on any challenge. Sometimes if the goal is a big one, such as losing a lot of weight or quitting smoking 20 cigarettes a day cold turkey, consider breaking your goal down into smaller pieces. If you have 50 lbs to lose, take it week by week and celebrate every pound you lose. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day, think about smoking 10 for the next two weeks.
